La recepción del Quijote en Gran Bretaña se ha constituido en una de las principales parcelas (si no la principal) del estudio comparado de las literaturas española e inglesa. A menudo se han resaltado las variopintas tendencias hermenéuticas de los traductores del Quijote al inglés en función de la interpretación de la obra cervantina predominante en sus respectivas épocas. Este artículo aporta dos consideraciones de importancia a ese debate. En primer lugar, llama la atención sobre el hecho de que, además de que cada traducción adoptase un tono determinado, los traductores solieron expresar sus ideas exegéticas sobre la obra en notas y ensayos incluidos en los preliminares de sus traducciones. En segundo, que muchos literatos prescindieron de traducciones y leyeron el texto en su versión original española. Además del obvio caso de Smollett, se aporta aquí el testimonio anónimo de un autor identificado como alguien “erudito” y “muy conocido”, publicado en los preliminares de la traducción de Jarvis, que discrepa de las tesis filológicas del traductor y, por el contrario, expresa una concepción propia del Quijote.

Comparative literature and translation: Quixote in English
Abstract
The reception of Don Quixote in Britain has become one of the main (if not the main) research strand in the field of the comparatist analysis of Spanish and English literatures. Scholars have oftentimes discussed the differing approaches to Don Quixote taken by its translators across the centuries depending on the interpretation of Cervantes’s that pervaded in their respective times. This article points at two new consequential factors to consider in this debate. Firstly, it foregrounds the critical introductions and notes written by translators and included in the preliminaries of their translations, wherein they expressed their interpretations of Don Quixote. Secondly, it argues that some authors read Cervantes’s novel in the Spanish original instead of in translation. This article discusses the case of Smollett, but most importantly, it discusses an anonymous piece by “a learned” and “well known” author included in the preliminaries of Jarvis’s translation, where this unidentified author disagrees with Jarvis’s views of Don Quixote.

A recepção de Dom Quixote na Grã-Bretanha tornou-se uma das principais parcelas (se não a principal) do estudo comparativo das literaturas espanholas e inglesas. As várias tendências hermenêuticas dos tradutores de Dom Quixote para o inglês têm sido frequentemente destacadas de acordo com a interpretação do trabalho predominante de Cervantes em seus respectivos períodos. Este artigo traz duas considerações importantes para esse debate. Em primeiro lugar, chama a atenção para o fato de que, além de cada tradução adotar um tom particular, os tradutores frequentemente expressam suas idéias exegéticas sobre o trabalho em notas e ensaios incluídos nas preliminares de suas traduções. Em segundo lugar, muitos escritores dispensaram as traduções e leram o texto na sua versão original em espanhol. Além do caso óbvio de Smollett, o testemunho anônimo de um autor identificado como "erudito" e "muito conhecido", publicado nas preliminares da tradução de Jarvis, que discorda das teses filológicas do tradutor e, ao contrário, expressa uma concepção do próprio Quixote.
